A naturist organisation has labelled the decision to ban nude swimmers from using a new Alton sports centre as "discriminatory", with one member insisting they have "been ignored". Andrew Welch, British Naturism BN spokesman and member, is concerned that the ban in Alton may "set a precedent" and threaten other nudist events across the country. The group, which had been using the old centre at the same site in Chawton Park Road for more than 30 years, held its last session on January 5 with the new centre opening on January On Thursday January 16 BN released a statement which called the ban "misguided" and "discriminatory", insisting it would be challenging the decision.
Mr Welch said: "There are up to four or five million in this country that are practising naturism. That is a hell of a lot of people not bothering with swimsuits. We are not going to be stamped on just because what we do is unusual. We feel we have been ignored. So now we want to sit down and talk with the people who make the decisions. Everyone Active area contract manager David Love said: "There is a substantial amount of glazing both internally and externally within the pool hall.
The external glazing is floor to ceiling along two sides of the main pool and makes the pool hall visible from a number of viewpoints. Due to this and after careful consideration during the build process, we reached the decision that the new Alton Sports Centre would no longer be able to cater for naturist swimming sessions.
Following this, we informed all members of the swimming group. We held a number of public forums during the consultation which the general public and local clubs were invited to attend.
Everyone Active seem to be dismissive of the problems. This is not happening and needs to change. By Emma Pengelly Multimedia reporter.
