A Message from the President
Tough one I hope her bumboat business in Portsmouth is doing better than this teashop in Cromer Her first book to look inside the original D'Oyly Carte Opera Company aside from her excellent, authorised biography of the late, great Kenneth Sandford was highly entertaining and I found this one to be even more so. With the passing of time, I cannot now explain why this second volume should leave me with even greater feelings of satisfaction - I remember my feelings more than the content, but only because that's how my poor, old memo It is somewhat difficult to review a book of this nature because unlike a novel I cannot giveaway a plotline and to reveal some of the factual content would be to spoil the pleasure of reading the book, but pleasure is certainly the correct word to use, and intensely so. I had a huge smile on my face for the most part, except for when it was clearly the author's intention for me to be oppositely emoted, for example when the oculars were moistened, as they most certainly were with Peter Riley's contribution to the original tome and by Clive Harre's contribution regarding the final performance here, or when I had moments of anger reading some of the more ridiculous newspaper crits whose barbs only seemed to be for their own 'look how wittily cutting I can be' egotistical reasons, in which it has to be said they failed dismally in that purpose. Although it is available online, please may I recommend that your inevitable purchase is made direct from Ms Morrell herself who may be contacted at robertamorrell ymail. We live in the north of England. My 22 year old son has gone to London for the weekend with a friend, and rang me earlier. I heartily recommend this brilliant rendition of their eponymous chorus from Edinburgh group Cat-Like Tread.
Grief, outrage, and righteous anger are tearing across social media and pouring out onto the streets in cities all over our nation - including thousands of peaceful and relentless protestors here in Seattle. The wrongful deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and - in our own neighborhood - Manuel Ellis have shone an unflinching light onto the horrific patterns of police brutality towards the black or African American population, and they have been a spark that has ignited this monumental outcry across the country. But this is about so much more than police brutality. This is about the worth of a black persons life , about their hopes and dreams and love and family, down to the very breaths they take. This is about identifying and challenging and working to overcome the pervasive systemic racism that continues to infect us and cripple our society. This is about getting individuals and lawmakers and CEOs and police officers and artistic directors and stay-at-home parents and anyone watching the news or their Facebook feed to be able to utter - without hesitation, equivocation, or qualification - three short words: Black. If your response is to protest, yell loudly and stay safe. If it is to contact Mayor Durkan or Governor Inslee and demand oversight and transformation, write persuasively and from the heart. Every act, no matter how big or small it may seem, is a step forward. Or tomorrow.
All regular meetings take place at p. Learn all about us! Find out more about the Society on Facebook. A month ago, the Society was preparing for its March meeting, when the coronavirus epidemic hit New York and all entertainment events in and around the city shut down indefinitely. We are probably unable to hold the meetings we had scheduled for the remaining months of the season through June.
We send our best wishes for good health and safe living to all of our members wherever you are. The PEEPER will still be coming to you these next three months, and we invite all of you to get in touch with us with comments and ideas that you would like to share. Let us allow the genius of W. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan to continue to inspire us and lift our spirits through recordings, videos and special internet events that may happen through the enthusiasm and cooperation of the Inner Brotherhood.
We will survive our physical separation until the day we are permitted to be together again! Read our full tribute to Jess. Andi volunteered to play the piano at hundreds of our meetings since the early s and was similarly generous to other Gilbert and Sullivan groups and gatherings over the years. We will miss her deeply. Audience is invited to sing the choruses.
