The occasion was NYC Bodypainting Day , organized by Andy Golub and Young Naturists America, and, after spending a couple of hours watching dozens of artists do incredible things to these gloriously nude "canvases", who, as a whole, boasted an extraordinary range of body types, I'd have to say the banner is correct. Not that every work of bodypainting here was a great piece of art, though most were pretty amazing. It's just that after a while you don't see, and think about, these nude physical people in the way that you're used to—as sexy, say, or imperfect, or unappealing, or sensational. Suddenly they all look good, or at least they all look different, but in different ways than before, and it made me wish that I and everyone else could appreciate and instantly see the beauty in all bodies as a matter of course. Anyway, the scene at Dag Hammarskjod Plaza was pretty wild, with loads of creative energy from the artists—there were apparently 75 painters on hand—and an infectious sense of liberation, and exhilaration, from the models. Photographers, supporters, art fans, and straight gawkers formed a thick crowd all up and down the taped-off perimeter of the painting area, with only a light presence by the NYPD until it was time to parade, when they bolstered the ranks significantly and employed familiar march-control tactics. It seemed like overkill, but with President Obama at the UN right at that moment, they probably had no choice. Do you know the scoop? Comment below or Send us a Tip.

Body painting is a form of body art where artwork is painted directly onto the human skin. Unlike tattoos and other forms of body art, body painting is temporary, lasting several hours or sometimes up to a few weeks in the case of mehndi or "henna tattoos" about two weeks. Body painting that is limited to the face is known as " face painting ". Body painting is also referred to as a form of "temporary tattoo". Large scale or full-body painting is more commonly referred to as body painting, while smaller or more detailed work can sometimes be referred to as temporary tattoos. Body painting with a grey or white paint made from natural pigments including clay, chalk, ash and cattle dung is traditional in many tribal cultures. Often worn during cultural ceremonies, it is believed to assist with the moderation of body heat and the use of striped patterns may reduce the incidence of biting insects. It still survives in this ancient form among Indigenous Australians and in parts of Africa and Southeast Asia , [1] as well as in New Zealand and the Pacific islands. A semi-permanent form of body painting known as Mehndi , using dyes made of henna leaves hence also known rather erroneously as "henna tattoo" , is practiced in India , especially on brides. Since the late s, Mehndi has become popular amongst young women in the Western world.

This always happens when he works a new neighborhood. Apparently, there are some people who don't know the law," he said, referring to the two officers in a squad car who pulled over and ordered him to stop. Still, it's important to Golub that his models be absolutely naked. Free expression and body acceptance are at the heart of his work. She wore thongs -- the kind that cover your feet, not your genitals.

He wore white socks and nothing else. But the law says it's legal. There's nothing that they did that was inappropriate They'll march to the United Nations and board double-decker busses for a tour of Manhattan.

Golub organized the event for the second year in a row with the help of the Young Naturists America. As they stood naked in front of Macy's, Aponte and Alston-Owens chatted with the huge crowds watching them in all their colorful glory, answering questions.

How does it feel to have your penis painted in public? Behind Aponte was a Victoria's Secret billboard, with a young, blond model, serving up a much different image of the human body. It's not wrong. Look for yourself. Alston-Owens, a plus-sized year-old model, described herself as "a giant bag of melted Skittles," to one young person. She likes to break up any possible tension with humor. She later told a little girl, "The important thing to know here is that you should feel good about your body, no matter what you look like.
